How to Prepare for Your First Piercing

December 19, 2017

Are you about to take the plunge and get your first piercing?

Whether you’re piercing your nose, eyebrows or even your nipple, getting your first piercing is incredibly exciting, but, for some, it can be nerve-wracking. You want the experience of getting your first piercing to be a good one, and luckily, you can take steps prior to getting your piercing that can make a huge difference in your experience. Here are a few tips from our piercing shop in Miami to help you get prepared for your first piercing.

#1. Find the right piercer/shop.
There are many different piercing shops out there, and — you guessed it — not all of them are created equal. When you go to the right shop, piercings can be incredibly safe with very little risk, but if you get pierced at a shop that isn’t super stringent about sanitation, the risks are much higher. Before you schedule any appointments or even pick out your jewelry, do your research about shops and piercers in your area.
Keep in mind that, even if you do your research, you should always trust your instincts. So, if you walk into a piercing shop and you get a bad vibe, don’t be afraid to walk back out again.

#2. Plan to go it alone.
It’s natural to want to have a buddy with you when you get your first piercing, but you should know that friends will often feed off of each other's nervous energy. The more keyed up you feel when it’s time to get pierced, the more difficult the whole process will be, so it might be best just to go it alone. However, if you have a friend who is relaxing and will keep you calm, there’s nothing wrong with a little company.

#3. Don’t go on an empty stomach.
When you’re sitting in the chair and the piercer comes toward you, it’s an exciting moment, and you’re bound to have a lot of extra adrenaline flowing through your veins. If you’re not careful, that adrenaline rush can make you pass out. Not only is it embarrassing to faint in the middle of a piercing — especially if you’re trying to put a brave face on in front of your friends — it also puts you at risk for getting injured. One of the most important things you can do to avoid fainting before, after or during your piercing is to make sure you have food in your stomach going into your appointment. It’s also smart to bring some sugary gum or a sucker, just in case you start feeling faint or lightheaded while you’re in the chair.

Getting a body piercing is not like getting your ears pierced, and it’s important to make sure that you are ready before you take the leap. We hope that these tips will help you enjoy a safe, successful, first-time piercing experience.
