Caring for a New Tattoo

Having a beautiful piece of art added to your body is so special. Once you’ve decided on your artwork, found the perfect artist, and spent some time in the chair, it’s crucial that you know how to take care of your tattoo, especially in the days following your tattoo. If it’s your first tattoo, keep reading to see what you can do to ensure your tattoo is properly taken care of.

Gently Wash Your Tattoo

When you leave the tattoo shop, you’re going to have a nice wrap on top of the tattoo to keep it protected. It’s suggested that you keep this on for no less than three to five hours. Once that much time has passed, it’s time to wash it gently. Start with lukewarm water and mild liquid soap. This will clean the tattoo while still being plenty gentle.

Moisture Accordingly

A quality moisturizer is equally as important when talking about the wellbeing of your tattoo. Once you’ve finished washing the tattoo, it’s time to moisturize. Apply a gentle moisturizer to the entirety of the tattoo. It’s best to use gentle, unscented moisturizers. After that, you can either cover it back up or give it some time to breathe.

Ask Your Artist

Every artist is going to recommend something different, so it’s essential that you take some time after you’ve been tattooed to sit down and talk with your artist. Depending on the size of the tattoo, the work they’ve completed, and any work that might be done in the future, they may have certain suggestions for you to follow. Your artist is going to know best, in regards to care and products for your tattoo.
