5 Things to Know About Watercolor Tattoos

June 20, 2018

Watercolor tattoos are the big new thing in the tattoo industry.

There are so many different types of tattoos you could consider getting, from traditional and tribal tattoos to black and grey tattoos, cover up tattoos, portrait tattoos, realistic tattoos and Polynesian tattoos, but no type of tattoo is quite as popular right now as watercolor tattoos. Whether you’re scrolling through Pinterest or Facebook, chances are, you’ll find a picture or two of stunning watercolor tattoo; however, there are a few things you should know before you go out and get one:

#1. You need to find the right tattoo artist.

If you want a simple, traditional tattoo, finding a tattoo artist who is capable of doing a great job is easy, but when it comes to watercolor tattoos, it’s important to do your homework when finding an artist. Because watercolor tattoos are still such a new trend, artists who have experience doing them are few and far between. Doing your research on the artist and the studio is the first step toward success.

#2. They may not last as long as traditional tattoos.

There are many factors that affect the longevity of a tattoo, but the lack of lining in watercolor tattoos has led many people to believe that they will fade more quickly and blur more than traditional tattoos. However, watercolor tattoos can have a black line base, and this is recommended for a longer-lasting piece.

#3. You’ll need to stay out of the sun.

Direct sunlight is the enemy of any tattoo, but since watercolor tattoos tend to have lighter colors that can fade easily, it’s even more important to stay out of the sun when you have a watercolor tattoo. This is because UV rays actually break down the pigments that are in the ink, causing fading.

#4. Choose the right location.

With every tattoo, choosing the right location is important, but with watercolor tattoos, it becomes even more important since they are more prone to fading in the first place. Friction, caused by your clothes rubbing against your skin, can slough off skin cells, causing the ink to fade and become dull. Choose a location for your watercolor tattoo that won’t get a lot of friction from your clothes, like on your arm.

#5. Take proper care of your skin.

Proper skin care is essential to allow your tattoo to heal as it should, but it’s also important to keep taking care of your skin the right away even after the healing is complete. Use a gentle soap that doesn’t contain any toxins or harsh chemicals that could strip away the natural oils from your skin. Furthermore, avoid scrubbing your tattoo, as this will remove pigments from the tattoo, causing fading.
